If you’re a fan of the 80s and want to let your hair down, look no further than a nightclub that offers all the hits of this colorful decade. The Australian city of Melbourne offers a small handful of venues dedicated to the 80s, from sophisticated clubs to more casual hangouts. So poof up your hair, put on those legwarmers and head out for a night on the town.

Downtown

Club Retro (retroclub.com.au) is located along Lonsdale Street in Melbourne’s city center. This venue features three levels, with two bar areas and a private section that can accommodate up to 40 guests. The club plays 70s, 80s and 90s tunes and has a black and white checkered dance floor to liven up the retro atmosphere. A rooftop beer garden is also available to patrons that has its own bar and provides magnificent views of the Central Business District.

Fitzroy

One Twenty Bar (120bar.com) is on Fitzroy’s Johnston Street, just north of the downtown area. Established in 1990, the club doesn’t charge a cover fee and provides three resident DJs, playing 70s, 80s and 90s music. Swing by on a Friday night for DJ Grandmaster Vicious’ selection of tunes, including a variety of hip hop and floor anthems. Saturday features DJ cKass, who spins retro tunes from the 70s and 80s. Doors open at 9 p.m. and drink specials are on offer all night long.

Prahran

Boutique Nightclub (boutique.net.au) is in the Prahran neighborhood, just east of Albert Park on Greville Street. The venue is elegant and decorated with lavish chandeliers, extravagant wall paper and plush lounges. For 80s music, come on a Friday night when Boutique holds its weekly “Flash” 80s glamor event. Dress up in your favorite retro outfit and dance the night away, with the event starting at 9 p.m. The nightclub also caters for small parties in a private lounge, as well as larger functions.

St. Kilda

Head down by the waterfront and spend an evening at Bar 362 (bar362.com). This St. Kilda venue opens on Friday and Saturday nights, offering both free and paid events throughout the month. Live bands are the main focus here, with a variety of retro tunes played from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Stay in the main bar area and kick up your heels to the music, or take a seat in the more private bar at the end of the building.
