People under 21 like to dance. Unfortunately, most dance clubs also tend to be bars that exclude patrons below the legal drinking age. In Pennsylvania, however, those who are not yet 21 can still get their groove on without worrying about having the right date on their driver’s licenses. A handful of under-21 clubs exist throughout the state.
Pittsburgh’s Club Zoo (clubzoo.net) describes itself as “the tri-state area’s only under-21 Mega Club.” Open to patrons aged 15 to 20, the 20,000 square foot venue includes four non-alcoholic bars, high-tech sound and light systems and a high-volume cooling system to keep the sweating to a minimum. The club is open every Friday and Saturday, as well as the occasional week night during school breaks. Club Zoo not only attracts thousands of underage patrons but also hosts all-ages shows from national music acts.

Two levels of teen fun, including video and game lounges and giant projection screens, can be found at Harrisburg’s Zodiac Dance Club (zodiacdanceclub.com). Patrons as young as 15 are welcome with a photo ID. Multiple bars serve up juice and other teen-friendly beverages on both levels of the club. The dance floor is on the upper level and features live DJs spinning contemporary dance music over a state-of-the-art sound system. The club hosts regular theme nights such as dance contests and beach parties.
Club Revive (clubrevive.com) is not so much a place as a concept. Club Revive travels to several different venues throughout eastern Pennsylvania, including Allentown, Reading and Philadelphia, and hosts regular under-21 dance parties in otherwise-adult nightclubs. Offering events such as beach parties and “No-School Sundays” — on evenings before Monday holidays — Club Revive features guest DJs and prohibits anyone over 21 to enter. The operator also offers regular contests to win prizes including the chance to be a guest DJ at a future event. A calendar of events can be found on the Club Revive web site.
Shampoo Nightclub (shampooonline.com) is not a true under-21 club but does offer entry to patrons between 18 and 20 at least twice a week. Sundays are regularly advertised as 18 to enter and 21 to drink; the other nights tend to vary but are typically either Friday or Saturday depending on the event. Sunday nights offer reduced admission to those with college IDs. The club has a main floor and an open-air tent when weather permits. On nights when younger patrons are permitted to enter and dance, wristbands are used to differentiate them from older patrons.
